Welcome to the 2022-23 School Year!

Dear OV Family,

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! I look toward the new year in earnest, with hope and enthusiasm for working together with all of our stakeholder groups to educate, empower, enlighten, and nourish our students. The team at OV is charged with a most precious and important task— taking care of our students’ emotional, intellectual, and physical needs— and I truly believe that we have the right people on board for the job. OV families and community members are a critical part of ensuring the success of the district’s mission with students, and I value all of our families as partners in the process.

Our priorities place students at the center of everything we do. As such, it is incredibly important for you to ensure that your child(ren) attend school regularly to reap the maximum benefits of their education at OV. Attendance is a critical area of focus this year, and we will be using the Inyo County Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) to assist any families that are having difficulty getting their students to school on a regular basis. The State’s expectation is that students will attend school for a minimum of 90% of the school year. Beginning at the end of August, we will be sending letters home any time a student’s attendance rate drops below 90%, in an effort to ensure that students are coming to school regularly. Please review the enclosed schedules and dates and keep them in mind as you plan family trips and appointments during the 2022-23 school year. Success starts with being here and I thank you for partnering with us to improve student achievement through excellent attendance.

On a lighter note, we are hosting a Back-to-School BBQ and Pool Party for families on Sunday, August 21, from 1-4pm. This is a great way for families, new and returning, to network and socialize. Please consider joining us that day for hot dogs and a dip in the pool. High School Orientation, for all students in grades 9-12 and their families, will be held on Tuesday evening, August 16, at 6pm. I hope to see you at one or both of these events!

Other activities that will be taking place this school year are highlighted on the back side of the 2022-23 attendance calendar, and there are a few schedule changes that I would like to highlight. First, please pay special attention to the new schedule for older elementary students. This year, there is a later dismissal time for 4th and 5th graders, who will now be dismissed at 3:35pm along with the 6th-12th graders. Second, the minimum day dismissal time has changed to 12:40pm. Finally, there are some new arrival and departure times on the transportation schedule, which is enclosed. In the event that we need to make any schedule changes, we will notify you in advance.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review this letter and the attached documentation, including the Aeries registration information. As I begin my fifth year of service to OVUSD, I want to underscore the importance of our families and community members in the educational experience of our students. My door is always open for you to come in to talk to me, my mind is always open to new ideas and suggestions, and my heart is full of love for the amazing place that we call OV. GO CUBS!

Sincerely,
